Focus shifts on NorthEast United FC match, Steve Coppell wary of challenge

After suffering a disappointing defeat in the first match at the hands of Kerala Blasters, ATK are keen to bounce back when they take on NorthEast United FC on Thursday evening at the Salt Lake Stadium.

What’s the team news?

Kalu Uche, who joined the team just a few hours before the first match, has been training with the first team and is available for selection. There are no new injury worries but Andre Bikey, Arnab Mondal and SK Faiaz are still in recovery.

How have NorthEast United FC started the new season?

NorthEast, who finished 10th last season, showed a lot of promise in their first game of the season with a 2-2 draw against a strong FC Goa outfit in Guwahati earlier this week.

What’s our overall record like against NorthEast United FC?

ATK have a 5-2 win-loss record from eight matches against the Guwahati franchise.

What Steve Coppell said...

On the opposition: ”I have great respect for NorthEast and the way Eelco sets up his team. There’s an element of continuity from last year in their game. We know it’s going to be a really tough game. They are a very capable outfit and have some very strong individual players.”

On what needs to be improved: “Ball retention it the biggest thing. We gave the ball away too easily the other night. Particularly when the conditions are so hot. When you haven’t got the ball, it seems like more of an effort. Hopefully, that is something that’ll be better against the NorthEast. We need the ball more to give us more potential to go forward in attack.”
